The story behind the painting Sunset Cliffs, Ca.
A few years ago our family took a vacation from Minnesota to San Diego. I’m always excited to return to California. I was born in Los Angeles back in 1971 and our family relocated to Minnesota when I was in grade school. I have so many amazing memories of California. One of the things I had forgotten until our recent trip was the beautiful smells. Weird right? The combination of the California air, the sea, and the desert took me right back to being a 5-year-old playing outside.
Today I paint in bright colors and bold lines. I know this is because of growing up in California. I don’t remember ever being inside but have hundreds of memories of playing outside.
This painting brings it all together for me. That hot yellow land with brush all around. I loved being outside in places like this. The Pacific Ocean in all its amazing size has always had a softness that other oceans just don’t have for me.
I think it’s kinda odd that after living in Minnesota for 40 years that California still feels like home. It’s in my soul and who I am.
